City council's snap decision to ban plastic bags in Toronto as of Jan,air jordan 1 for sale. 1 was one of those stories that made news across Canada. It had green minded councillors from coast to coast wondering if they could do something similar. Here is a look at what other municipalities are saying about the ban.
Um, no that's about all Mayor Hazel McCallion had to say last week about whether Toronto's western neighbour would follow suit. Furthermore, McCallion questioned whether Toronto had acted rashly.
"I believe that when you going to ban something, or you going to put any legislation in, you should do an impact study and I don know if Toronto has done one, jordan 2 retro outlet," she told reporters at Queen's Park last week.
The legality of Toronto's bag ban was on the minds of councillors in Vancouver, air jordan 10 bobcats outlet, a city which has pledged to become the greenest in the world by 2020. Ridding Vancouver of plastic bags is part of that 10 year strategy.
But Councillor Andrea Reimer said Monday her city does not have the power to impose that kind of legislation, so they are relying on the province. Premier Christy Clark seemed more open to the idea.
"Los Angeles banned them (about two weeks before Toronto). In the time since the Los Angeles ban and Toronto's, the premier went from saying 'no, we're not considering' to 'well we'll put it on the table.' So that's very positive," Reimer said.
In Alberta, Alderman Gian Carlo Carratold local media his city should "embrace the inevitability of the future and get rid of those things."
At least one of his colleagues seemed cool to the idea. Alderman Jim Stevenson told the Calgary Herald: "I think it's working well in Calgary without it. People are really picking up on the reusable bags. The chain stores are buying in, too."
City councillor Dawn Sloane also floated the idea for a Halifax plastic bag ban, although Mayor Peter Kelly was quick to shoot it down.
Meanwhile in Ottawa, air jordan 11 grey for sale, Mayor Jim Watson told reporters a bag tax similar to the 5 cent fee Toronto had prior to the outright ban would make more sense.
"People habits and attitudes are changing by companies charging five cents a bag. That kind of program seems more effective so leave well enough alone," he told the CBC.
